Tweeting Precious Knowledge

Good morning Media Studies:

Another group of students in our nation's capital are paying close attention to the Ethnic Studies Ban in Arizona.  Like us, they are watching Precious Knowledge and responding to it with intelligence, energy and committment to the issue.  Before we watch the rest of the film today, check out the link below.

What do you think about using Twitter to express your thoughts (and outrage!) about this issue?

If you have a smartphone, feel free to tweet during the screening.  Use the hashtag #preciousknowledge to get extracredit for your particpation.  If you don't have a smartphone, you can pull up Twitter on the school computer.

Please keep your tweets focused on the film and the issue.  You can socialize later.  Let's recognize that right now we are working on something very important to students and teachers throughout this country.  Please respect the issue and the students in Tucson by staying focused on #preciousknowledge.

  1. I think tweeting about this movie would be a good idea.

I know some people who do like to tweet and having the opportunity to share what they think on something they do anyways is a good idea.

The tweets that the 9th graders posted where not only interesting, but intelligent as well. I get the sense that they put a lot of time behind what they wanted to say, and not just tweet anything that came to mind. They came up with some really good questions as well.

  2. Wow that is so smart! It's a perfect hobby for people who like to post reactions to what they are watching on TV. I think it must have been so crazy to see so many people (including the principal) posting about the same issue. And powerful as well. I can just imagine all the retweets and favorites going on. It's a perfect way to capture reactions and see others reactions. Twitter is such a great community and a perfect place to store these thoughts rather than blurting them out during the movie. I think that must have also led to an interesting dicsussion. Kudos to whoever came up with that idea - it's great!

  4. i find it so instresting that another group of students in our nationals capital are also paying attention and being informed about whats taking place in arizona. i feel as though eventully this will be world known and people are going to fight for the class to not be banned and im hoping that my class is also a part of that. twitter is amazing! great outlet somethings shouldnt be tweeted but i think anything can every tweet has some importance. its instresting to me though, i find it great how such an huge popular social network even can revert back to such a serious sitaution such as the tuschon arizona banning of etich studies. the hashtag itself speaks. precious knowlege our knowelge is just so rare and you dont get mutiple shots at it i do beleive that we should tweet because its popular and it will get around lot more it will catch a students attention more then the news or an article itself. if it becomes trending that would be compelling! #teampreciousknowlege.

  5. I think using twitter to express our thoughts about this topic and any other is good. You let other people know what's going on and maybe you can even form a group and do something to help the cause you're tweeting about. For example with Arizona banning this class, watching this video and having you (Ms. Blatteau) tweet about it makes me appreciate my class and education a lot more. And i think its great that even the principle is tweeting about it. Twitter has so many users, and instead of tweeting about the small things or even about nothing, using it for something important and productive is really smart. I think we would prove a lot of people wrong. People who think we are ignorant and say we only think about ourselves and we don't care about what goes on anywhere else.

  6. yeah i think tweeting about this movie is a good idea and it sound cool. i would tweet about the movie cause its something useful to use tweeter for and not just to socialize.

i agree with what one of the 9th graders said "When you were young, everyone always told you to fight for what you believe in, and when you do, they go and shut you down." i agree with this 9th grader because its true when you are young everyone do tell you to fight for what you want and when you do they do shut you down and tell you you cant. i think its unfair and not cool at all. i think that people should support you no matter what and shouldnt shut you down.

  7. This idea is pretty good, Tweeting your thoughts & express your feelings about the movie. The more you tweet about this issue, people is going to think 'what's precious knowledge?" They should see the movie ; its very interesting & extraordrinary to watch! Maybe people got something to say about #preciousknowledge

  8. Tweeting is like caring and taking action without physically doing it it shows that people care and that they have support from everywhere. I believe that the government have issues feeling powerless and insecure, but they have to realize that their education has past and that we learn differently. I feel like they need to realize that we are not the same generation as the one before; we are new, improved, ambitious and realistic. What happened in the past has made America what it is today and freedom isn't even what it used to be. As a matter of fact a lot of time people (politicians, legislatures, etc.) used the words equality, freedom, and unity not knowing that they are restraining a lot of that freedom and equality that was promised in their fancy speeches. Also , I can't help but feel like Arizona is very self-governed because the President nor any other legislature from others states or the capital have intervened and resolved it in a reasonable manner.

  9. Every social network to me need talk about this situation. Twitter is one of those social networks that will do well because many of people use twitter and making it a big issue will gain ppeople's attention. Everyone can share their point of view other people throughout that world.
