Connections from Connecticut: Racism and Budget Cuts

One day in Media Studies class, I asked students to think about what the following things had in common:

They are going to share some of their brilliant ideas from that day as comments on this post or on blogs of their own. Meanwhile, back in Connecticut, things seem better than Arizona, better than New York City. But when we scratch the surface, which we love to do, we start to notice that there are connections to be made to Arizona and New York City. Right here in our own backyard:

How do these events in East Haven and at the New Haven Board of Education meeting relate to the bigger issues of racism, immigration, tolerance and school reform that seem to be popping up all over the place?

I guess time will tell.

  1. From what I can tell, the three pictures all have to do with problems that are currently going on in society and school systems. Not just society though, it seems to have to do with racial identity.

The first amendment talks about everyone having freedom of speech, but yet it doesn't seem like people have a freedom of speech especially students. I think that since the students are going to be the next "Working generation" so I would think that people would want to hear about what they have to say. But it's just the opposite.

And In the past there has been a problem with racism, and people say that doesn't exist anymore, but with the racial problems that are going on, and with the Latino's being harassed, and in Arizona being told that they can't learn about their history, isn't that like going backwards in time. Where there is segregation ?

The government in Arizona are trying to tell people that the ethnic studies class is segregating people, but that's not true. There are a variety of different ethnicity's in that class.

If you look at people in general though, what do you see ? When I look around, I do see some intermingling with groups of people. But it seems like for the most part, people are always near people who are more like them. The question I've been wondering is, why does it seem like that ? Am I just not around enough people to see otherwise ? Or is that just how society is, even though people say that's racism and it's frowned upon ?

I think the problems that are going on in New York, and Arizona connect with each other because they both have to do with school. In Arizona classes are being shut down, and in New York schools are being closed. And the Connections between Arizona and in CT, are the racial problems. And how some people don't seem to be welcome, and they can sense that.

I think sometimes people get it into their heads that "Oh they aren't welcome here, but I'm just not going to tell them that, because I don't ant to seem rude, or be called racist." and sometimes they don't realize, that the people who aren't "wanted around" can tell that. I know when people don't want others around they might not say it, but you can almost always tell when that's going on. Because you send a vibe to those people (Whether you want to or not) and they can feel that they aren't welcome, or wanted.

    Just my thoughts ...

ive noticed that the same thing that is going on in east haven is going on in Tuscan,Arizona. why is there such a problem with latino's now but a few years ago people would hired illegal immigrants and pay them under the table?when they are doing your dirty work or the work you dont want to do its ok but when they want to learn about their history its a problem? To me it is wrong because everyone else gets to learn about their culture but now latinos cant? A question for other commenters and readers: Do you think it is tight to take away knowledge from a certain ethnicity?

  3. I feel like these occurring events are so similar that it's starting to increase ad the education problem is just the base of this but when you look at the problem there's a lot of racial issues that are rising from this problem. It's a shame that people would say such comments as they did in the march throughout East Haven. I don't understand how people could says such words and feel such anger because one race has decided to take a stand. It's incomparably shameful to see that people in 2012 are still racist and have venomous tongues as they do. The reality of these situations is that that's America, the land of the free, where the people have fought in unity to get what they want. I admire these Latinos and I support their struggle to equality and opportunity because education is a gift; knowledge is the greatest thing a person could have or receive but the opportunity to search within it and use it to your advantage is an opportunity that everyone should have. Discrimination shouldn't be allowed, telling people to go back home should never be stated, and saying that the taxes you pay shouldn't be used for freedom of speech, and other rights movements that this country is founded on, shouldn't even be in a person's mind. I say this because I and my mother and my siblings that live in America pay taxes as well as whites and we do not find it okay to tell any race words that would discriminate against their culture. If I didn't do it, What made these people feel so insecure to the point where they felt like they should say those mean things?! It puzzles me to see that grown people have became so selfish, insecure and mean to others. Since when were whites declared dominant? Since when did it say that ONLY their tax money was used for civil rights movements? Who in the world told them that they can't do the same? It's called counter-protesting, there's always a better solution than saying cruel words or getting violent. The world has to mature and see itself from other shoes in order to get a solution that would work for all. Maybe if people unite and care for everyone and everything on this Earth then we can feel peaceful and mature to create solutions to all our problems.

  4. I agree with kerwin. He is right before no one had a problem with hiring illegal immigrant now out of nowhere is a big problem. That’s messed up. People need to learn how to be fair and see that not everyone is the same. They can’t just judge us and treat us like they are. I bet they wouldn’t like it if we treat them like they treat us when they go to our lands. When they go on vacations to our lands or whatever they go do. We don’t treat them with hate or burn their flags or talk bad about them. We treat them like we would like to be treated if when we come here. We welcome them with respect and love unlike they do to us. Why the change from one day to another. Why not let us learn our culture? I don’t understand what makes them think that them letting us learn our culture is going bring hate to us for them. That’s not even the case. If anything then shouldn’t black people hate the white people too for having them as slaves?

  5. What i truly noticed about all these pictures is that it has something do with our nations education. Arizona banning Ethnic Studies, New York closing school and Burn This Book being banned from schools. Since the government want to improve our education why are they taking away subjects that we like to learn, books we like to read or closing down our schools. They're not making our education better they are trying to demolish and dismantle our learning environment and thats not right. We ned to stand tall as a nation and say that it is wrong to takeaway our education. Like the guy in Precious Knowledge said, "There's nothing wrong with kids learning, there's something wrong with the schools." I believe that it is our own government setting us up to fail in life.
